Litter and Illegal Dumping
At Strathfield Council, we are committed to keeping our streets and environment clean for everyone in our community. Leaving rubbish on the street, nature strip, in a park, or next to a bin is illegal and on-the-spot fines for littering or dumping may apply. Litter and illegal dumping not only harm and pollute our local parks, streets, and natural environment but also our wildlife, water quality, and public health. Maintaining our community clean is a shared responsibility and every action helps!
What is Littering and Illegal Dumping?
Littering is the improper disposal of waste such as food packaging, cigarette butts, bottles and cans.
Illegal dumping is the disposal of larger waste items such as furniture, appliances, and construction material without proper approvals in areas such as our streets, parks, and vacant lots.
Why It Matters
The negative effects of litter and illegal dumping extend far and wide.
- Environmental impact – Waste pollutes our water ways, blocks drains, harms local wildlife, and disrupts natural habitats.
- Health and safety risks – Hazardous items can endanger people and animals, while litter attracts pests and degrades our environment.
- Economic costs – Cleaning up litter and illegal dump sites require lots of money and effort that could otherwise support vital community projects and services.
How You Can Help
- Dispose your waste responsibly. Use designated bins and recycling stations.
- Report illegal dumping on our Strathfield Hub App or contact Council.
- Volunteer for clean-up events. Join or start initiatives to keep our community clean and green.

Report Litter and Illegal Dumping
Any information can assist Council to investigate and avoid litter and illegal dumping in our area. If you see an illegal dump site or someone littering, report it on our Strathfield Hub App or contact Council by providing information such as:
- Address and exact location of illegal dumping (if possible, give details such as under the large tree, near a metal gate, etc.).
- Types of dumped materials, and if you think there might be any hazardous waste
- Date and time of dumping.
- Name and address of person(s) responsible (if known)
- Vehicle details, such as model, registration number and colour
- Photographs of the incident
You can also report littering from a vehicle to the EPA or report an abandoned shopping trolley to Trolley Trackers on 1800 641 497 (freecall) or email trolleytracker@trolleytracker.com.au.
Clean-up Collections
Council’s Clean Up Collection service allows each residential property up to three clean up collections per year of up to 2m3 for removal of bulky household items.
Leaf Litter & Stormwater Pollution
Leaves can cause stormwater pollution, clog storm drains and cause drainage and flooding issues. Sweep up your leaves and put them in the green garden bin instead of sweeping them into the kerbside.
Leaf litter on public domain or waterways is classified under the POEO Act 1997 as pollution and can attract fine of $4,000 for an individual and $8,000 for a business.
