Strathfield Town Centre is the major transport and retail centre of the Strathfield district. In the late 19th century Strathfield Town Centre featured a small rail station, a few shops and large Victorian mansions. However, in the 1920s the rail station was extensively expanded and Strathfield became one of NSW’s major city and country rail stations. Homes made way for rail expansion and development of a shopping precinct. Strathfield Council acquired land surplus to the railway and created Strathfield Square (park and open space) in the 1920s. The Square was extensively redesigned in the 1980s.

Strathfield Town Centre is located beside Strathfield railway station, one of the most interconnected railway stations in all of Sydney, as well as being a major bus terminal. There is a free council car park available for the public beside the town square.

The major shopping precinct in the town centre includes many shops and businesses, particularly along The Boulevarde and Strathfield Plaza shopping centre which includes some 50 retailers with a major supermarket and various food outlets. In addition to retailers, there are three office towers with variety of businesses in the many fields such as education, finance, health, and travel etc. The town centre has many good Korean restaurants.

The area is known for its pleasant heritage ambiance and streetscape and close proximity to the historic Homebush rail station, one of Sydney’s first rail stations built in 1855. The centre is located on the 1878 “Village of Homebush” estate, where the name of the Town Centre is derived. The buildings in the centre date back to the early 1900s and feature many federation and interwar style buildings.

Homebush Village is located on the south side of Homebush railway station and is separated by Homebush Primary School. There is parking available in streets adjacent to the town centre and off street parking with Strathfield Library a just short walk down Rochester Street.

There are some 25 shops in the village with a good mix of businesses including a community bank, takeaway shops, supermarket, butchers, green grocery and cafés. The village benefits from a variety of cafés, restaurants including Sri Lankan and Indian restaurants.

The Homebush West residential and shopping centre, Flemington Rail Station and Sydney’s Stockyards (now Sydney Markets) commenced development in the 1880s. Nearby residential and industrial development created demand for local shops. The oldest shops in Homebush West were built in the 1920s. Zoning changes in the late 1960s and 1990s increased nearby housing density which in turn has enlarged the size and scope of businesses in this shopping precinct to meet growing demands.

Homebush West Town Centre is located on the south side of Flemington railway station with the famous Sydney Markets on the northern side. It is close to the major roads of Centenary Drive and Parramatta Rd. Parking is available in nearby streets.

This town centre is characterised by the large number of authentic Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, butchers, green grocers and herbalists as well as traditional Asian medical outlets.

Strathfield South

The Strathfield South Shopping Centre is located on the ‘crossways’ of Liverpool Road and Liverpool Road (Hume Hwy). Liverpool Road was first built in 1814 joining Sydney to Liverpool by road. This road predates most residential development in Strathfield and in early times featured small half-way hotels for travellers. By the late 19th century a small shopping area developed featuring a post office, general stores and White’s timber yards. Though the timber yard is long gone, older locals still refer to this centre as ‘White’s Corner’. Many buildings including the hotel date back to the 1920s.

Strathfield South Shopping Centre is very accessible being located directly on the Hume Highway on the corner of Liverpool and Homebush Rd. Sharing the intersection is Strathfield South Primary School and a Council Car Park for local shoppers.

This centre has a variety of businesses including a local hotel, post office, hairdressers, restaurants, as well as financial, legal, and a local auto electrical business.
